Taormina

Taormina offers a breathtaking view over the route rich in monuments and narrow streets. The first monument is located before the Corso Umberto, it is the beautiful church of San Pancrazio, patron of the city, built on the remains of a Hellenistic temple dedicated to Jupiter Serapis. Walking along the Corso Umberto I, a few dozen meters away is the palace Corvaja, where the Sicilian Parliament met for the first time in1411. Next to the building you can admire the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria built on the ruins of the Odeon, built on the ruins of a Greek temple. The baroque church was built in the first half of 1600. Inside is the marble statue of Saint Catherine dating from 1493, the interior of the church has a single nave. Under the floor of the church is a crypt for the burial of famous people. Opposite the church is the way that leads to the homonymous Greek Theatre monument.

The theater was built in the Hellenistic and later modified in the second century BC. Even today, the theatre hosts performances and concerts between May and October. Among the most important we remember the Naumachie, of Roman origin. In the middle of the course Umberto stands the church of St. Joseph that overlooks the Piazza IX Aprile. It was built between the end of 1600 and beginning of 1700 in Baroque style. Next door there is the Clock Tower or Porta di mezzo, built in the late Middle Ages. Continuing along the Corso Umberto you reach the Town Hall and the Cathedral. Opposite to the Cathedral in the square where you can admire the fountain of the Taurus, the only artistic fountain of Taormina. At the end of the main street, before going out of Porta Catania, taking Via Spuches, you reach the Palace of the Dukes of Santo Stefano.

The original structure of the building was founded on existing walls probably dating back to the Arabs. Going up to Mount Tauro is the medieval castle. Now a days remains the tower and the male of the castle. To complete the main street take a walk to the Belvedere. Go by the beautiful public gardens in the English style. Go down the street up to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, to which there are architectural elements of the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
